How much does an EV charger cost in Teesside? (2026)
In 2026 a 7kW home charge point on Teesside costs £850 to £1,200 fitted for a tethered unit and £900 to £1,300 untethered. Long cable runs add £100 to £300, consumer unit work £300 to £600, buried ducting £40 to £90 per metre, and workplace sockets start around £1,500 each.
Read the fitted price, ignore the box price
Charge point advertising is full of hardware prices: a smart 7kW unit for £399, a tethered model for £449. That is the box on a shelf. It is not a circuit, it is not protective devices, it is not four hours of a qualified electrician's time, it is not testing and certification, and it is not the submission to the network operator. Once all of that is in, a proper Teesside installation lands where the table above says it does, and a quote well below those numbers has left something out that you will meet again later.
The fitted price should buy the survey, the charge point, a dedicated circuit sized for continuous load, the protective devices, the earthing solution, mounting and cable management, commissioning of the smart features, the electrical installation certificate, Part P notification and the connect-and-notify submission. Anything else, trenching, a new board, extra cable, belongs on the quote as a separate line so you can see what you are paying for.
What actually moves the number
Distance from the consumer unit
The biggest variable in domestic work. Ten metres of clipped cable through a garage is cheap. Twenty-five metres from a hallway board, up into a loft, along the eaves and down a gable to a detached garage is a different job, and it adds £100 to £300 in cable and labour. If the parking sits across an area of driveway or garden, ducting has to be dug in at £40 to £90 per metre depending on the surface, and block paving that has to be lifted and relaid sits at the top of that range.
The state of the consumer unit

A 22kW unit only makes sense with a genuine three-phase supply and a car that can accept it, which most cannot. Paying for three-phase capability you cannot use is one of the more common ways to overspend.
Grants: who still gets help
The old blanket homeowner grant is gone. What remains is targeted: support of £350 towards a home charge point for people who rent, or who own a flat, where the property has dedicated off-street parking; a landlord version for residential and commercial rented property; and the Workplace Charging Scheme at £350 per socket for organisations with off-street staff parking. Running costs, which are the real saving
The installation is a one-off; the tariff is forever. Charging on a dedicated overnight EV rate is dramatically cheaper per kilowatt-hour than charging on a standard variable rate, and cheaper again than public rapid charging, where you are paying for the hardware, the site rent and the grid connection in every unit of energy. For a household covering ordinary Teesside mileage, commuting between Stockton and Middlesbrough, school runs, a monthly trip up the A19, the difference between home off-peak charging and relying on public rapids over a year is normally larger than the entire cost of the installation. That is the number worth modelling before you agonise over £80 of hardware difference between two units.
Commercial pricing works differently
Business quotes are dominated by civils and capacity, not by the chargers. Trenching across a car park, ducting, reinstatement, bollards, bay marking and signage often exceed the hardware cost, which is why the cheapest way to add bays later is to lay spare ducts during the first dig. Judging a quote in four questions
Is the charge point named, make and model, tethered or socketed, with the warranty term? Is the circuit specified, cable size, breaker rating and protection type, rather than "wired to the board"? Is the earthing solution stated? And are the extras itemised, so trenching, board work and cable length appear as lines rather than being folded into one round number? A quote that answers all four can be compared honestly with another. A single figure on a text message cannot, and the gap between two such quotes usually turns out to be scope rather than value.
